Trojans Take Third in Frozen Creek Tourney

With a 5-2 victory over Lexington on Sunday, the Trojans secured the third place trophy in the Frozen Creek Tournament in Kettering.

The team started off on Friday with a commanding 10-3 victory over Mason in the first round. Garrett Paff scored his first goal of the season, Connor Sexton had two goals and an assist, Ian Kuntz had a goal and four assists, and Scott Riedel made several key saves en route to the victory. The game started off rocky with Mason outscoring the Trojans 3-2. But the Trojans didn't look back after that scoring 8 unanswered goals the rest of the way.

Saturday proved to be less than hospitable to the Trojans as they were beaten handily by Clay 10-5. The end of the first saw Troy pull out to a 3-2 league. Grant Gariety scored the first two goals for the red and gray. Unfortunately it was all downhill after that as Clay left the second period ice leading 7-3. Despite two goals in the third, the Trojans could not regain the lead.

Later that evening, Troy faced host Beavercreek. At the end of 2 periods, the Trojans found themselves down 6-0. With round robin tournament scoring, they needed to win the final period in order to clinch a berth in the bronze medal game. That they did as they dug down deep and rode a Zak Uhlenbrock goal to win the period 1-0 and ending the game at 6-1.

On Sunday, the Trojans took the ice against Lexington. The two teams appeared to be very evenly matched in skill and number of players. Caden Lombardo opened the scoring, sending Troy to a 1-0 first period lead. The teams would battle it out until the Trojans found themselves up 4-2 with less than two minutes remaining. At that point, Lexington pulled their goaltender and Ian Kuntz took advantage of it, scoring an open net goal and putting the icing on the cake. The final score was 5-2 and the third place trophy belonged to Troy.

Next weekend, Troy hosts a tough Talawanda team. Come on out to Hobart Arena on Sunday, 12/2, and support our boys! The puck drops at 5:45.
